Communication Breakdown
Arguments that go in circles and end in frustration, or conversations that shut down before they even begin. This can include patterns of criticism, defensiveness, or contempt.

Couples counseling is a structured space where both partners can speak honestly, with a skilled therapist guiding the conversation. It is a form of relationship therapy where you and your partner meet together with a trained, neutral third party who is there to support the relationship, not to act as a referee or judge.
In your first session, the therapist will get to know you both: your relationship’s history, your individual concerns, and what you each hope to achieve. Subsequent sessions focus on exploring communication patterns, identifying conflict cycles, and deepening your emotional connection and intimacy. To get a comprehensive view, your therapist might suggest occasional individual sessions to supplement the work you do together.
It is also common to have homework between appointments, such as communication exercises, journaling prompts, or connection rituals to practice new skills. This process is available for all partnerships, including dating couples, engaged couples looking for premarital counseling, married couples, and partners navigating separation.
There is no relationship problem too small or too big for couples counseling. Some of the most common reasons our clients in Seattle reach out for support involve feeling stuck in patterns that no longer serve the relationship. Many couples see themselves in these common challenges:
Arguments that go in circles and end in frustration, or conversations that shut down before they even begin. This can include patterns of criticism, defensiveness, or contempt.
A sense of emotional distance and disconnection has replaced the warmth and closeness you once had. The loss of intimacy leaves you feeling more like you co-exist than connect.
You are working to recover from the pain of betrayal or rebuild the foundation of your relationship after an affair.
Mismatched libidos, avoidance of intimacy, or unspoken needs are creating tension and disappointment.
A new baby, job loss, health issues, or relocation can put an immense strain on a partnership.
You have different values around money, debt, or spending habits that lead to chronic arguments and stress.
You want to build a strong foundation and get aligned on key life decisions before getting married.
Navigating the complexities of step-parenting and integrating two families is creating friction.
You need a space to navigate the unique dynamics and communication needs of non-monogamous relationships.
You are navigating unique relationship dynamics and seeking an affirming therapist who understands your experience.
Our couples therapists use research-backed approaches to help you understand the patterns in your relationship and change them. We primarily draw from two highly effective, evidence-based models: The Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). You do not need to know anything about these methods; that is our job. Our role is to choose the approach or blend of therapies that best fits your unique situation.
Developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, after more than 40 years of research with thousands of couples, this method is a cornerstone of modern Gottman couples therapy in Seattle. It is based on the "Sound Relationship House" model, which gives couples a clear roadmap to strengthen their friendship, manage conflict constructively, and create shared meaning in their lives together.
As a leading approach to EFT couples therapy in Seattle, this model focuses on the emotional bond and attachment between partners. EFT helps couples identify the negative cycles of disconnection that trap them in arguments and emotional distance. By understanding the underlying emotions and attachment needs driving these cycles, you can learn to break free from them, foster a more secure bond, and create new, positive patterns of interaction.

Intimacy challenges are more common than most people admit, and they are one of the things couples therapy is especially good at addressing. Sexual and intimacy concerns are among the most frequent issues couples bring to us. Because this is such a vital part of relational health, we have made it a cornerstone of our practice.
Our founder, Brittany Steffen, is an AASECT-certified sex therapist and an AASECT-certified supervisor who leads our specialty in this area. This dual expertise allows her to provide clinical guidance and supervision to all couples and sex therapists at Steffen Counseling Services, ensuring a consistent, high-quality approach to sex-positive care. We provide an approachable, clinical, and non-judgmental space to discuss topics like desire discrepancy, arousal issues, sexual pain, and reconnecting after life changes. Wondering what a session actually feels like? Many couples are nervous about what happens in the therapy room. Our goal is to create a safe, structured, and hopeful environment. Here is what you can expect when you begin couples counseling with us:
Sessions are typically 50 minutes long, though 90-minute sessions are available and often recommended for complex issues or when you want to make deeper progress more quickly. In every session, both partners will have the opportunity to speak. The therapist’s role is to facilitate the conversation, not to dominate it, ensuring the dialogue is balanced and productive. You will never be forced to discuss anything before you are ready.
Between sessions, your therapist may suggest specific exercises or activities to try at home to reinforce the skills you are learning. We regularly check in on your progress, revisiting your goals to ensure therapy remains on track. Confidentiality is paramount; what is said in your session stays in your session. Most couples start with weekly appointments and may shift to biweekly as they see improvement and feel more confident in their new patterns.

Couples counseling is self-pay. Sessions with our supervised clinical interns are available on a sliding scale ($65–$85). Sessions with our licensed therapists are $165.
Our couples therapists offer secure telehealth sessions to partners anywhere in Washington State, so you can attend together from wherever is most comfortable. In-person sessions are also available at our offices in Seattle (Fremont and Georgetown) and Tacoma.
In our couples therapy model at Steffen Counseling Services, both partners are equal clients, and the relationship itself is the focus of treatment. Because insurance billing demands assigning one person ownership of the medical record, legal control of notes, and treatment status, using insurance would fundamentally alter our relational approach, so we do not submit claims even when a plan technically allows reimbursement.
Our rates are designed to offer a range of options. Sessions with our highly supervised clinical interns are on a sliding scale from $65–$85. Sessions with our licensed therapists are $165.
Yes, we are accepting new clients. We have in-person offices in Seattle (Fremont and Georgetown) and Tacoma, plus telehealth services for couples located anywhere in Washington State.
Relationship counseling in Seattle brings both partners into the same session to work with a therapist who is focused on the dynamic between you. The goal is to improve communication, resolve conflict, and reconnect. In contrast, individual therapy can help by focusing on one person’s goals, history, and emotional patterns. The two can complement each other, but relationship counseling makes the partnership itself the client.
Yes, we do. Our premarital counseling in Seattle is designed to help couples build essential communication skills, align on major life decisions like finances and family planning, and create a strong foundation before marriage. It is a proactive way to invest in your future together.
The duration of couples therapy in Seattle varies. Some couples come to work through a specific, short-term issue and may find resolution in 8–12 sessions. Others with more deep-seated patterns or significant betrayals may continue longer. Most couples report noticing real, positive changes within the first few sessions as they start implementing new tools.
This is a very common situation. Even if only one partner is ready to start, it can still create meaningful change in the relationship dynamic. When one person learns new ways to communicate and regulate their emotions, the entire system often shifts for the better. We can help you get started with individual therapy while leaving the door open for your partner to join later.
Absolutely, yes. We are an affirming practice where all relationship structures, gender identities, sexual orientations, and family configurations are welcomed and respected. Our therapists are trained to provide competent and sensitive care for LGBTQ+ and polyamorous/non-monogamous couples.
