We’re excited to welcome Paul Brown, our newest Pre-Licensed Clinical Intern at Steffen Counseling Services! Paul brings a unique perspective to therapy, shaped by two decades of experience building companies and a deep interest in what it means to live a meaningful, fulfilling life.
Paul understands something many people discover along the way: success and happiness are not always the same thing. You can build a career, care for your family, maintain relationships, and meet the expectations you’ve set for yourself while still feeling burned out, disconnected, or uncertain about what comes next.
His approach to therapy is grounded in the belief that you don’t have to wait for a crisis to seek support. Sometimes, the most important work begins when life looks fine on the outside but something doesn’t feel quite right on the inside.
A Different Perspective on Success, Stress, and Personal Growth
Before entering the field of mental health, Paul spent 20 years building companies. That experience gave him a firsthand understanding of ambition, achievement, and the pressure to keep moving forward. It also helped him recognize how easy it can be to prioritize professional accomplishments and external expectations at the expense of personal well-being.
Paul is particularly interested in supporting people who are accustomed to handling everything themselves. For many men, asking for help can feel uncomfortable or even like a sign of weakness. Paul hopes to help change that narrative by creating a space where vulnerability is welcomed, self-reflection is encouraged, and seeking support is recognized as a meaningful step toward growth.
Whether you’re navigating career burnout, questioning long-held expectations, experiencing a major life transition, or simply trying to understand why you feel stuck, therapy can help you reconnect with what matters most.
You don’t have to abandon the life you’ve built to make room for your own needs.
An Honest, Collaborative Approach to Therapy
Paul’s therapeutic style combines careful listening with thoughtful, direct questions. Rather than jumping straight to solutions, he works to understand what you’re experiencing and what might be keeping you from moving forward.
Together, you’ll explore the patterns, beliefs, and internal responses that shape your decisions and relationships. Instead of simply trying to eliminate uncomfortable feelings, you’ll have the opportunity to understand what those feelings might be communicating and what purpose certain patterns have served in your life.
Paul draws on approaches including Internal Family Systems (IFS), somatic therapy, and mindfulness-based practices. These approaches can help you develop greater awareness of your internal experiences, recognize familiar patterns, and respond to yourself with more curiosity and intention.
His goal is not to tell you how to live. It’s to help you develop a stronger internal compass so you can make choices that feel more aligned with your values, needs, and sense of purpose.
Supporting Individuals, Couples, and Families
Paul works with individuals, couples, and families, with particular interests in men’s issues, career changes, burnout, perfectionism, midlife transitions, anxiety, depression, self-esteem, and questions of meaning and purpose.
He also supports people navigating relationship challenges, parenting, grief, stress, and major life changes.
For couples, Paul emphasizes the importance of approaching therapy as a neutral, collaborative process. Rather than taking sides, he works to support the relationship itself while helping each partner better understand their own needs and the needs of the other person.
Paul also brings personal experience with open and polyamorous relationships. He understands the importance of an affirming therapeutic environment where people can talk openly about their relationships without feeling the need to justify or defend how they love.
Whatever brings you to therapy, Paul aims to create a space where you can be honest about your experiences, explore difficult questions, and work toward meaningful change.
