Immigration Psychological Evaluations in Seattle
Immigration cases can bring up deep emotional strain, uncertainty, and hope all at once. At Steffen Counseling Services, we offer comprehensive immigration psychological evaluations that honor your story while meeting the specific needs of your legal case. Our reports are detailed, trauma‑informed, and created in close collaboration with your immigration attorney.
What Is an Immigration Psychological Evaluation?
An immigration psychological evaluation is a structured mental health assessment used as supporting evidence in immigration cases. It provides a clinical picture of how your experiences, stressors, and mental health symptoms affect your daily life and relationships.
These evaluations typically include:
- A thorough clinical interview and mental health history
- Assessment of current symptoms, functioning, and coping
- Exploration of trauma, hardship, or persecution experiences
- A detailed written report prepared for your attorney and, when needed, the court or immigration officials
Our goal is to translate your experiences into clear, compassionate language that can be understood by legal professionals who may not specialize in mental health.
Types of Immigration Cases We Support
Evaluations for Different Immigration Cases
We provide immigration psychological evaluations for adults and families throughout Washington state via secure telehealth platform. We work closely with immigration attorneys to understand the legal questions in your case while maintaining our clinical independence.
For hardship waiver cases, we focus on the emotional and psychological impact that separation, relocation, or continued uncertainty would have on you and your qualifying family members. We explore:
- Mental health symptoms such as anxiety, depression, or trauma responses
- How stress affects daily functioning, work, parenting, and relationships
- Existing vulnerabilities, medical issues, or family circumstances that increase hardship
For VAWA cases, we carefully document the psychological impact of domestic violence, coercion, and other forms of abuse. In these evaluations, we:
- Listen to your story without blame or shame
- Assess symptoms related to trauma, such as fear, hypervigilance, or numbness
- Describe how abuse has affected your sense of safety, self‑worth, and ability to function
Our approach centers your safety, autonomy, and emotional well‑being.
U‑Visa evaluations focus on the psychological effects of being a victim of a qualifying crime. We help show how the crime—and what followed—continues to impact you. We may:
- Assess symptoms such as nightmares, flashbacks, or panic
- Explore changes in trust, relationships, and sense of safety
- Describe how these experiences affect work, school, and community life
Asylum evaluations involve carefully documenting persecution, war, torture, or severe harm you experienced or fear you may experience in your country of origin. We understand that:
- Memories may feel fragmented or hard to talk about
- People may minimize their suffering to survive
- Fear responses, dissociation, or emotional numbing are common after severe trauma
We move at your pace and focus on making sure your experiences are conveyed clearly and respectfully.
What to Expect from the Evaluation Process
We know starting this mental health evaluation process can feel intimidating. Our approach is structured, transparent, and paced with your emotional safety in mind.
Step 1: Free 15‑Minute Consultation
We start with a brief phone or video consultation to confirm that we are a good fit, clarify the type of immigration case you have, review your timeline, and discuss fees. If helpful, you’re welcome to include your attorney or an interpreter—whether a professional interpreter or a trusted friend or family member—in the conversation.
Step 2: Attorney Collaboration and Paperwork
With your written permission, we connect with your immigration attorney to understand the specific legal questions in your case. We review any documents they provide—such as referral letters, declarations, court notices, or medical records—to ensure that our evaluation addresses relevant details.
Step 3: Clinical Interviews (1–3 Sessions)
The core of the evaluation is a series of interviews, usually totaling 2–4 hours. These are conducted over secure telehealth or in-person, and can be scheduled in one longer session or multiple shorter sessions. During these meetings, we talk about your history, current symptoms, and the ways immigration‑related stress has affected you and your family. You have control over the pace, and we check in regularly to help you stay grounded.
Step 4: Assessment Measures (If Needed)
In some cases, we may include standardized questionnaires or screening tools to better understand symptoms of trauma, anxiety, or depression. We explain each measure before you complete it and share how it informs the evaluation.
Step 5: Report Writing and Attorney Review
After the interviews and assessments are complete, we write a comprehensive report that links clinical findings to the legal questions in your case. Reports are typically completed within a set timeframe (for example, 2–3 weeks) after the final interview. When possible, we coordinate with your attorney about deadlines and may offer rush options for urgent cases.
Step 6: Final Report and Follow‑Up
Once the report is complete, we send it securely to you and your attorney. We can also schedule a brief follow‑up session to review the report, answer questions, and help you feel prepared for how it will be used in your case.
How We Approach Your Story
Trauma‑Informed and Culturally Aware Care
Many people seeking immigration evaluations have lived through significant trauma, discrimination, or chronic stress. We approach your story with care, moving at a pace that feels manageable and explaining each step before we take it.
Our stance includes:
- A nonjudgmental, validating, and collaborative tone
- Awareness of how racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, and other forms of oppression affect mental health
- Sensitivity to cultural beliefs about family, privacy, and mental health
- Clear explanations about confidentiality, including how information from the evaluation may be used in legal settings
You deserve to feel seen as a full person—not just as a case file.

Fees and Accessibility
We recognize that immigration psychological evaluations are a significant investment, and we aim to be transparent about costs and what is included in the process. Fees reflect the time involved in clinical interviews, record review, interpretation of clinical information, collaboration with attorneys when appropriate, and preparation of a detailed written report.
Our standard fee for an immigration psychological evaluation is approximately $1,200. This fee includes:
- Upwards of three hours of clinical interview time
- Review of relevant records and supporting documentation
- Preparation of the completed written evaluation report
- Scoring and interpreting the results of 2-4 psychological assessments
- One round of revisions or clarifications, if requested by the attorney
- Consultation and coordination with your attorney as needed throughout the process
Additional edits, extensive revisions, supplemental letters, or services outside the scope of the original agreement may be billed separately at an hourly rate.
For cases involving urgent legal deadlines, a rush fee may apply to expedite scheduling and report completion. Please let us know as early as possible if you have an upcoming filing or court date.
Please note that immigration psychological evaluations are considered a legal-support service rather than medically necessary treatment and are therefore not covered by insurance. As a result, these services are private pay only, and we do not bill insurance or provide superbills for reimbursement.

All immigration evaluation services are offered on a private-pay basis. We will review fees, payment expectations, and any applicable rush fees with you before scheduling so you have a clear understanding of costs upfront.
You are never forced to share details you are not ready to discuss. We will, however, gently encourage you to share enough information for us to understand your experiences and how they affect your mental health. We check in often and can slow down, pause, or reschedule if you feel overwhelmed.
Yes. We frequently collaborate with attorneys located in other parts of Washington. As long as we are permitted to provide services based on your location, we can coordinate with your attorney by phone, email, or secure document sharing.
If you need interpretation, please let us know in advance. We can discuss options for professional interpreters or, when appropriate, using a trusted person in your life. We will work with you and your attorney to choose the option that best protects confidentiality and accuracy.
