About Brittany

My name is Brittany Steffen, and I am the owner and founder of Steffen Counseling Services. I graduated from Seattle Pacific University’s marriage and family therapy graduate program in 2012, and have worked as a therapist in the Seattle area for the past 10 plus years. In 2018 I began the process to become an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist, to meet the expanding demand for sex therapy.

In 2019 I left a group practice to open my own practice, which has since expanded to include interns and full-time therapists. When the pandemic hit in 2020, therapists were inundated with people seeking therapy, and it became even harder to find referrals with openings for new patients. Because I was already providing supervision as a WA State Approved Supervisor, and teaching, it was a natural step to add an internship program to my practice. Clinical interns are current graduate students who provide the essential service of low cost, sliding scale therapy. I started with one intern in 2020, and quickly added three more to meet the demand for services. By the end of 2020, there were five of us, including myself, and counting.

As my clinical interns graduated from their graduate programs and requested to stay on as full-time employees, I opened Steffen Counseling Services, PLLC. Today SCS employs six full-time therapists, the majority of whom are former clinical interns and students from my time as an adjunct professor at a local graduate program (2015-2020), where I taught “Gender Perspectives in Family Therapy”, and “Systems Treatment of LGBTQ Y0-outh and Families”. In addition to managing my group practice, providing supervision, and seeing my own patients, I am currently working on becoming an AASECT Approved Supervisor, and am projected to complete that process in 2025. My work continues to expand and change, and SCS will continue to do the same.

In addition to my work as a supervisor, professor, and certified sex therapist, I enjoy working on a very wide variety of writing and speaking projects including:

  • Contributing writer for the book, “A Practice Beyond Cultural Humility: How Clinicians Can Work More Effectively in a Diverse World”, chapter entitled Queering the ORCA Stance
  • Writer and educator for the 50 year old sex toy company, Adam & Eve, content featured on Direct TV, social media, and a variety of blog sources
  • Presenter/speaker for a variety of groups, including Kitsap County Human Rights Conference, Seattle Pacific University, Navos, GLSEN, The Foundation for Sex Positive Culture, Q13 Fox News, Washington United for Marriage, the Between Us Clinic, and more
  • Sex educator on social media platforms (Instagram, Tikok)
  • Presenter for a variety CUT videos (Youtube)

My work outside of seeing patients speaks to one of the core values of SCS–education. We provide internship placements for students from from the University of Washington, Seattle Pacific University, Antioch University, Divine Mercy University, the University of the Cumberlands, The Seattle School, and moving forward, Seattle Universtiy.
