Mental Health Awareness Month, observed each May, is a national reminder of the importance of emotional wellbeing, access to therapy, and reducing stigma around mental health care. While awareness has grown in recent years, many people still face barriers to finding affordable, affirming, and effective support.
At Steffen Counseling Services (SCS), we view Mental Health Awareness Month as more than a campaign. It’s a reflection of our ongoing commitment to accessible, client-centered therapy for individuals, couples, and families.
What Is Mental Health Awareness Month?
Mental Health Awareness Month began as an effort to increase public understanding of mental health conditions and expand access to care. Today, it also emphasizes prevention, early intervention, and the importance of ongoing emotional support.
Mental health affects every part of life, including:
Relationships and communication
Stress management and coping skills
Work-life balance and burnout
Identity development and self-esteem
Healing from trauma and past experiences
Therapy can play a key role in supporting these areas, whether you’re navigating a specific challenge or looking to better understand yourself.
The Importance of Accessible Mental Health Care
One of the biggest themes of Mental Health Awareness Month is accessibility. Many people want therapy but struggle with cost, availability, or uncertainty about where to start.
At Steffen Counseling Services, increasing access to mental health care is a central part of our mission. We offer low-cost sliding scale therapy through our clinical internship program, where sessions are provided by trained interns who are actively supported by a team of experienced clinicians and dedicated supervisors. Our interns also accept Molina Medicaid plans, helping expand access for clients using insurance.
This model allows clients to receive thoughtful, high-quality care at a reduced fee, while also benefiting from the insight and guidance of a collaborative clinical team. In addition to intern services, our licensed clinicians accept Premera insurance plans (including many BCBS and Lifewise plans), and we provide superbills for out-of-network reimbursement to further support affordability.
By combining sliding scale options, insurance coverage, and strong clinical support, we aim to make therapy more accessible without compromising the quality of care.
A Nonpathologizing Approach to Therapy
Mental health awareness also means rethinking how we understand emotional distress. At Steffen Counseling Services, we use a nonpathologizing, trauma-informed approach that recognizes your experiences within context.
Rather than focusing on what’s “wrong,” therapy can help explore:
How past experiences shape current patterns
How coping strategies develop and evolve
What meaningful change looks like for you
This approach allows therapy to feel collaborative, respectful, and grounded in your lived experience.
Collaborative and Specialized Care
Finding the right therapist matters. During Mental Health Awareness Month, many people begin exploring therapy for the first time, and having access to a collaborative care team can make that process smoother.
SCS offers a team-based model of care, with clinicians who specialize in:
Trauma-informed therapy, including EMDR
DBT and skills-based approaches for emotional regulation
Sex therapy and sexual health
Relationship and couples counseling
Our therapists consult with one another when appropriate, helping ensure clients receive thoughtful, well-rounded support.
Connecting You to Broader Mental Health Resources
Therapy is one part of a larger support system. As part of our commitment to mental health awareness and access, SCS helps clients connect with additional resources when needed.
This may include:
Referrals to psychiatric or medical providers
Higher levels of care, such as IOP or PHPs
Support groups and educational tools
Identity-affirming and culturally responsive care networks
Expanding access means recognizing that mental health care often works best when it’s interconnected.
How to Participate in Mental Health Awareness Month
You don’t have to make major changes to engage with your mental health. Awareness can start with small, intentional steps:
Learning more about mental health and therapy options
Talking openly with trusted people about your experiences
Exploring whether therapy could be helpful for you
Noticing patterns in your emotional responses and relationships
For many people, reaching out to a therapist is one of the most impactful steps they can take.
